hope and renewal

Here are Wattleseed Counselling – our therapeutic practice is founded on this symbolism and we firmly believe that empathy and connection is an integral requisite to empowerment, resilience, enduring strength and growth.

Our vision and aspiration for those we walk alongside is to truly experience this through exploring and working through concerns or problems in the therapeutic setting to find either answers, peace or acceptance which can lead to recovery from symptoms the issues are causing.

You can make an appointment with us directly. You don’t need a referral through your GP to see us (although your GP is able to refer to us), and you don’t need to have a mental health care plan through an appointment with your GP. Often but not always, referrals under a mental health care plan are related to particular mental health diagnosis or conditions and Psychologists generally hold lengthy waitlists which mean it’s not always easy to get counselling support when you need it.

Kym holds and aligns to particular core values that guide her practice and underpin the ethos and purpose of Wattleseed Counselling. These values are Honesty, Trust, Transparency, Integrity and Accountability

These values aren’t just ‘proposed’ values – printed on a wall or a card, they are values Kym actively promotes and practices every day – with everyone. Kym has professional supervision fortnightly as part of her registration, and to ensure she is maintaining these promised values, with you.

We understand it’s not always easy to voice our innermost worries or concerns out loud, and there are sometimes barriers to opening up and sharing with family members or friends.

We aim to establish a safe and trusting relationship with you, so you feel comfortable and open to exploring whatever is worrying you, in confidence. Our therapeutic approaches are evidenced based and trauma informed. There’s nothing you can say, that we can’t hear.

At Wattleseed we also appreciate the influence that individual beliefs and values have in guiding and shaping thoughts, actions and behaviours. We feel it incredibly important to hold and align to core values that guide our therapeutic practice, and which underpin the ethos and creation of Wattleseed Counselling. These core values are Honesty, Trust, Transparency, Integrity and Accountability. These values aren’t ‘proposed’ values – printed on a wall or a card, they are values we ‘walk and talk’, in that we actively promote and practice them every day, with everyone. As an experienced Registered Professional Counsellor through the Australian Counselling Association, Kym is committed to regular clinical supervision for the purpose of ensuring we maintain and uphold our values when walking alongside you.

If it feels like Counselling is something you would like to consider, we encourage you to make an appointment with us.

What you can expect

In our first session we will discuss and determine a clear view of what you hope to achieve in the therapeutic setting, such as your needs, goals and expectations for Counselling. Based on this vision we can then discuss and establish a plan and schedule, to work toward your desired outcomes.

Types of Therapy and Counselling approaches
Our therapeutic modalities are evidence based and trauma informed enabling you to explore, process, and work through any aspects of your life you are struggling with. We understand there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach so we may use individual therapeutic styles or an eclectic style based on what is working for you. Our preferred therapies are:

Grief and Loss therapy

Grief and Loss is commonly experienced in multiple areas of our lives.  Mostly it comes to mind when we are thinking of the death or loss of a loved one, however it is far more wide-reaching than that and some may not recognise that this is what they are experiencing.  There are also some types of loss that aren’t ‘socially recognised’ which cause us issues in trying to make meaning and adapt to our loss.

What happens if grief is untreated or unresolved ?

While intense emotional responses are normal in the acute phase of grief, sometimes people experience problems integrating their loss and moving forward in their life, feeling ‘stuck’ or ‘frozen’ in chronic mourning, continuous rumination and inability to see a way forward, which indicates they may be experiencing what was known previously as complicated grief, and is now known as Prolonged Grief.  If you believe this is what you are experiencing, we are able to provide you with specialised support.

Family violence counselling

Another area of particular focus for Wattleseed Counselling – is providing therapeutic support for victims and survivors of family violence.

Having worked for 15 years in the family violence service sector, Kym has a wealth of experience for providing one-on-one support to victim survivors of family violence, deep knowledge of the drivers of family violence, and the nuanced ways that violence, abuse and coercion are pervasive and cause incredible ongoing psychological and cumulative harm.  Due to this, you will receive an understanding for your therapeutic experience that is rarely found amongst mental health professionals.
